What is wisdom tooth removal?
Wisdom tooth removal is a surgical treatment that removes one or more wisdom teeth, which are the permanent adulthood teeth positioned at the end of of jaws. If a wisdom tooth does not have enough capacity to grow, causing discomfort, or infection, it will most likely need to be extracted.
However not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed.
Although many people believe that wisdom teeth removal to be painful procedures, thanks to advances in modern dentistry, tooth extractions have become relatively quick and painless.
At Ocean View Dental, our team of dental professionals are highly trained in performing a variety of extractions, including including dental implants, wisdom tooth removal. if you are anxious we offer to have wisdom teeth removed under IV sedation
Why do people need their wisdom teeth out?
Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth extracted. In some cases when the teeth finally appear there is enough room and they settle into place just like any other tooth. The main difference is that they are difficult to brush and maintain due to their location at the back of the mouth which can make them more prone to decay.
Unfortunately, wisdom teeth have long been identified as a source of problems and continue to be the teeth most likely to not come through properly otherwise known as ‘impacted’. When impacted they can cause pain, discomfort, swelling, infection, problems with surrounding teeth as well as in some cases develop cysts and tumours.
Process Widsom Tooth Removal
The process of removing misaligned or impacted wisdom teeth is more complicated, and when a wisdom tooth has to be taken out piece by piece, it’s one of the most difficult tooth extraction procedures in dentistry.
Wisdom teeth are particularly prone to infection.
Bacteria and food particles can easily get lodged between a wisdom tooth and the gum, and because of their location at the back of the mouth, wisdom teeth are harder to clean, especially if they’re partially impacted.
You may have an infected wisdom tooth is you experience any of the following problems:
  • Swelling and pain in the jaw
  • Bleeding and/or swollen gums
  • Bad taste in your mouth
  • Persistent bad breath
What To Expect?
Before the surgery takes place, our dentists will use our state-of-the-art dental technology and equipment to further examine the site of the wisdom tooth. This allows us to determine if extraction will have the best outcome for the patient, or if there are any other ways to save the tooth. If extraction is required, the patient will then be scheduled to come back at a time of their convenience.
On the day of the extraction, our dentist will discuss the procedure further and answer any additional questions the patient may have. To begin the extraction, sedation and pain management will be administered to ensure the patient remains comfortable and pain-free during the surgery.
Your comfort is of the utmost importance to us. We’ll prescribe appropriate medication – such as an antibiotic or pain relief – during your recovery to keep discomfort to a minimum. Plan to give yourself a couple of days downtime with a light schedule as you rest. Soft foods are recommended for the first week.
A follow-up appointment will then be made to allow our dentists to assess the patient’s progress and healing.

As we’ll discuss in our initial consultation to ensure that you are qualified, but most patients for all ages qualify.

Wisdom tooth extraction offers a number of benefits. You shouldn’t feel any pain as your wisdom teeth are removed because the area will be numb. However, if you do feel pain during the procedure, tell your Yandina dentist so they can make you more comfortable.

Many times wisdom teeth don’t have room to grow properly and can cause problems. Erupting wisdom teeth can grow at various angles in the jaw, both horizontally and vertically.

Some dentists recommend removing wisdom teeth if they don’t fully emerge. We believe it’s better to remove wisdom teeth at a younger age, before the roots and bone are fully formed, and when recovery is generally faster after surgery. This is why some young adults have their wisdom teeth pulled before the teeth cause problems.

In the past, it was commonplace to perform this procedure under general anaesthetic in a hospital, with the benefit of being completely unconscious or ‘knocked out’ for the whole procedure. The downside to this is that general anaesthetic does carry a number of risks and patients have to go to a hospital which can be very costly and inconvenient.

Now there is another way…

When extracting wisdom teeth most of our patients choose to have the procedure done under IV sedation so that they can have the most comfortable experience. We also have interest free payment plans available.
