Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth extracted. In some cases when the teeth finally appear there is enough room and they settle into place just like any other tooth. The main difference is that they are difficult to brush and maintain due to their location at the back of the mouth which can make them more prone to decay.
Bacteria and food particles can easily get lodged between a wisdom tooth and the gum, and because of their location at the back of the mouth, wisdom teeth are harder to clean, especially if they’re partially impacted.
- Swelling and pain in the jaw
- Bleeding and/or swollen gums
- Bad taste in your mouth
- Persistent bad breath

Is extracting my wisdom tooth painful?
Wisdom tooth extraction offers a number of benefits. You shouldn’t feel any pain as your wisdom teeth are removed because the area will be numb. However, if you do feel pain during the procedure, tell your Yandina dentist so they can make you more comfortable.
Is it better to remove a wisdom tooth when I am older?
Many times wisdom teeth don’t have room to grow properly and can cause problems. Erupting wisdom teeth can grow at various angles in the jaw, both horizontally and vertically.
Some dentists recommend removing wisdom teeth if they don’t fully emerge. We believe it’s better to remove wisdom teeth at a younger age, before the roots and bone are fully formed, and when recovery is generally faster after surgery. This is why some young adults have their wisdom teeth pulled before the teeth cause problems.
Do I have to go to the hospital to have them out?
In the past, it was commonplace to perform this procedure under general anaesthetic in a hospital, with the benefit of being completely unconscious or ‘knocked out’ for the whole procedure. The downside to this is that general anaesthetic does carry a number of risks and patients have to go to a hospital which can be very costly and inconvenient.
Now there is another way…
When extracting wisdom teeth most of our patients choose to have the procedure done under IV sedation so that they can have the most comfortable experience. We also have interest free payment plans available.
