What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal is a dental procedure in which the fragile pulp at the middle of the tooth is removed. The pulp, which supports tooth growth, comprises blood vessels, connective tissue, and nerves.
Root canal treatment repairs the damage caused by deep decay to restore the tooth to full function and enhance its appearance.
It will also prevent the spread of infection within your mouth and helps to preserve jaw bone that supports facial structure.
What may lead to the need for root canal treatment?
Before a root canal treatment is considered, the tooth’s pulp may have been damaged. There are several factors that may cause pulp damages which are;
  • Broken or cracked tooth
  • Too many dental procedures on a particular tooth
  • Tooth decay or untreated tooth cavity
  • Tooth injury may also cause broken tooth or injury to the pulp
Root Canal Treatment
A root canal treatment takes at least two appointments. At the first appointment we will clean out the infection from the tooth and fit a temporary crown, and later place a permanent dental crown to help preserve its longevity and your smile.
The first stage of root canal treatment at takes 30 to 60 minutes on average. The procedure will take longer if you’re having a larger tooth with multiple roots treated.
The treatment involves:
  • X-rays to determine extent of damage or infection
  • Local anaesthesia to numb the area
  • Drill an opening in the affected tooth
  • Removing diseased tissue
  • Cleaning, disinfecting and shaping the canal inside the tooth
  • Filling and sealing the area
  • Permanent crown will be required after treatment to protect the tooth.

Root canal therapy is fairly straightforward and generally causes no more discomfort than getting a dental filling.

After Root Canal Treatment
On average it takes less than a week to recover from a root canal, and your affected tooth may be sensitive for a few days.
Any discomfort can be relieved with prescription or over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen. You should avoid hot or cold foods and drinks, also best to avoid any sticky, hard or crunchy foods.
With proper care, a tooth that has had root canal treatment can last as long as other teeth.
When you might need root canal treatment
A root canal may be beneficial if you have:
  • Decay that’s penetrated into a tooth nerve
  • A hypersensitive or painful tooth
  • A dental abscess
  • A cracked tooth
  • A knocked-out tooth that is being reinserted

Root canal treatment is not painful as we utilise anaesthesia and can save a tooth that might otherwise have to be removed completely.

As we’ll discuss in our initial consultation to ensure that you are qualified, but most patients for all ages qualify.

In most cases, root canal therapy is a better way to treat an infected tooth than an extraction. However, there are exceptions, such as if the tooth has suffered extreme damage. We will carefully analyse your oral health before making a treatment recommendation during our consultation.

Most patients can return to their normal activities directly after their root canal procedure. However we strongly recommend our patients to take the day off and rest. As most of patients can return to work the very next day without any issues.
