Before a root canal treatment is considered, the tooth’s pulp may have been damaged. There are several factors that may cause pulp damages which are;
- Broken or cracked tooth
- Too many dental procedures on a particular tooth
- Tooth decay or untreated tooth cavity
- Tooth injury may also cause broken tooth or injury to the pulp
- X-rays to determine extent of damage or infection
- Local anaesthesia to numb the area
- Drill an opening in the affected tooth
- Removing diseased tissue
- Cleaning, disinfecting and shaping the canal inside the tooth
- Filling and sealing the area
- Permanent crown will be required after treatment to protect the tooth.
Root canal therapy is fairly straightforward and generally causes no more discomfort than getting a dental filling.
A root canal may be beneficial if you have:
- Decay that’s penetrated into a tooth nerve
- A hypersensitive or painful tooth
- A dental abscess
- A cracked tooth
- A knocked-out tooth that is being reinserted
