What are custom nightguards
Dental night guards are removable appliances that are worn over the teeth to protect them from damage during sleep. They are commonly used to treat bruxism, a condition where a person grinds or clenches their teeth unconsciously during sleep. Night guards act as a barrier between the upper and lower teeth, preventing excessive wear and tear on the teeth, jaw joint, and surrounding tissues. They are also used to protect teeth from damage caused by clenching and grinding, and to reduce headaches, jaw pain, and tooth sensitivity.
Custom-made Night guards are more comfortable to wear and offer superior tooth protection than generic mouthguards. Night guards can help with bruxism (teeth grinding). Both children and adults should wear mouthguards during contact sports and activities like motorcycling.
Nightguards are made of hard, durable plastic to help you stop your teeth grinding at night.
Benefits of nightguards
Protects teeth from damage: By acting as a barrier between the upper and lower teeth, dental night guards prevent excessive wear and tear, chipping, and cracking of the teeth caused by bruxism.
Reduces jaw pain and headaches: By distributing the forces generated during bruxism evenly across the surface of the night guard, dental night guards can help reduce jaw pain, headaches, and tension in the neck and shoulders.
Prevents further dental problems: By protecting the teeth from excessive wear and tear, dental night guards can prevent the need for expensive and invasive dental procedures in the future, such as root canals, crowns, and implants. They can also help prevent the development of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, a common complication of bruxism.
Easy to clean and maintain: Dental night guards are removable and can be easily cleaned with soap and water.
Custom-fit for comfort: Dental night guards are made from moldable materials and can be custom-fit to the individual’s mouth for maximum comfort and effectiveness.
Cost-effective solution: Compared to the cost of expensive dental procedures, dental night guards are a cost-effective solution for preventing and treating the symptoms of bruxism.

The short answer, no. While over the counter nightgaurds may help soften the blow a bit they are not designed or made in such as way as to provide enough protection to your unique bite. People often find them to be uncomfortable to wear and in some cases don't wear them at all due to it being so uncomfortable.

Custom-fitted night guards, by virtue of their exact fit, let you talk normally, don’t restrict your breathing and stay firmly in place, allowing you to concentrate on playing the sport you love. You should consider it a mandatory part of your sporting equipment, no matter your age or experience.

To keep your night guard in tip-top working order, you’ll need to keep it out of the sun, wash it in cold water after use, keep on the supplied plastic model cast and get your dentist to make sure it’s still OK when you go in for your regular check-ups.

Only dental professionals can design and manufacture a custom-fitted nightguard that provide adequate protection.

Cost will come down to the type of night guard you choose. Over the counter night guards can cost anywhere from $5 to $80. Custom-fitted night guards are more costly, averaging around $150 – $300+ but this all depends on your unique bite, and will be best to discuss it with your dentist in the initial consultation session.

A custom night guard will have an average lifespan of 5 years, but depending upon the wear, it can potentially need a replacement in just 1 year.
