How long does a filling last?
Amalgam fillings are durable and effective, which is why they have been used for many decades. On average, you can expect a metal filling to last for about 15 years before needing to be replaced, but the length of time can vary based on several factors, such as if you grind or clench your teeth.
Composite resin fillings don’t last as long. You may need to replace them every 7 to 10 years.
Can composite fillings be whitened?
Composite resin fillings are nonporous, but the material can become slightly porous over time. This usually occurs at the surface and causes the filling to stain. However, composite fillings do not respond to tooth whitening procedures.
How do you maintain fillings?
Make sure to follow the daily recommendation of brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day after meals. Avoid foods that can stain your filling such as tea, coffee and wine. Minimise your sugary food intakes to lessen your probability of tooth decay. Use a soft toothbrush along with any non-abrasive toothpaste.
