What is the Child Dental Benefit Scheme?
In Australia, children aged between two and 18 years have free basic dental care through the public system, all part of the Commonwealth-funded Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule began on January 01, 2014. It allows eligible children $1000 worth of dental treatment over a two year period. Eligibility is assessed by the Child dental benefits and you can call us with your Child’s Medicare number and details to check if they are eligible.
This allows us at Ocean View Dental too completely bulk bill all eligible services up to $1000 so there is no out of pocket costs up to this limit. This means we can provide the highest standards of oral care without the need to worry about costs. We can provide check-up’s, cleaning, x-rays, fissure sealant, fillings, extractions and root canals. Orthodontic and cosmetic work is not covered at this stage.
For more information parents can visit www.humanservices.gov.au/childdental.
* The CDBS continues to be means tested, which requires of Family Tax Benefit Part A or a relevant Australian Government payment.
*Free when services covered by the Commonwealth Government’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule are bulk billed by participating Practitioners for treatments provided to eligible patients.

Your child’s first visit with us
As soon as your child turns two it is recommended they see a dentist to receive an oral health assessment. At Ocean View Dental we understand that children may be nervous or have fears about visiting a dentist, so we endeavour to ensure their visit with us is as comfortable as possible. There is a TV directly above our dental chair for your child’s entertainment, we also have a spare seat in the dental studio for any parents that would like to accompany their child. We aim to provide your child with a positive experience accompanied by plenty of giggles for both the child and the parent!
At the initial visit your child will meet out team and get to know both the practice but more importantly our Dentist. The initial consultation will involve a visual examination of the mouth, looking at the teeth and gums to ensure your child’s oral health is going well. However if there are any signs or possible risks of decay, or any other dental issues presenting our Dentist will discuss this with you. We also take the time to educate your child about correct brushing and flossing techniques as well as the importance of healthy nutrition on teeth.
Depending on the age of your child and their first visit and X-ray may be taken, they are usually suggested when the child is around six years of age. The X-ray allows the dentist to see what is happening between teeth and below the gum line which may highlight any important issues such as any cavities, the positioning and sizing of teeth, any crowding and whether there are any signs for future orthodontic treatments.
At the end of your visit the Dentist will take time to answer any questions you may have and ensure your child is leaving with a happy and healthy smile.
Tips for you and your child’s first visit
Kids are very good at picking up on anxiety in their parents, that’s why we suggest that you as a parent try to relax as much as possible about your child’s dental appointments. If your child has any questions or concerns about their visit, it’s important that you explain to them that dental visits are a regular occurrence for everyone to ensure we all stay healthy. We also suggest that you try to avoid using any negative words such as pain, drill or needle. Most importantly be supportive and encourage a good oral hygiene routine at home.
